At IFA 2024, Qualcomm revealed their new 8-core Snapdragon X Plus processor, designed to power more affordable entry-level laptops. Positioned below the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite and the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus, the 8-core version shares the same architecture but features reduced graphics capabilities, making it less powerful in GPU-intensive tasks.
The Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip comes with 30MB of CPU cache—12MB less than its higher-end counterparts—and delivers about 50% lower graphics performance, according to Qualcomm’s benchmarks. It also offers approximately 20% less CPU performance compared to the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite, while maintaining similar productivity performance to the 10-core X Plus.
This new processor is expected to bring down laptop prices further. Upcoming laptops like the Asus Vivobook S 15 and Dell Inspiron 14, equipped with the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core, are expected to retail around $899, compared to $1,300 for models featuring the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite. The launch highlights Qualcomm’s ongoing efforts to make ARM-powered laptops more accessible to a broader range of consumers.
